Ever since the end of May and the beginning of June, DeWalt has teased and slowly ramped up a new product they were promoting using the tagline and hashtag “#WorldsFirst.” Many speculated what DeWalt had up its sleeve and DeWalt unveiled it on June 21st. DeWalt released its FlexVolt batteries which is a new battery system that automatically changes voltage of the battery…depending on the tool it’s connected to.

It’s no secret that miter saws and table saws are vital on a job site. And usually, a job site needs some sort of power supply. That means that many of these tools have cords…which can be a safety hazard.

DeWalt also thought of this and that’s why they created a battery that can last longer on a jobsite and make every tool cordless if needed.

What exactly is FlexVolt?

FlexVolt is 60 Volt battery and power system that can power larger power tools such as miter saws or grinders. DeWalt’s current batteries max out at 40V and are mostly designed for outdoor equipment that rely on other power sources. The FlexVolt goes beyond their traditional limits and can be doubled up to provide 120V if needed.

What makes the FlexVolt really stand out is while it can work with tools that need the 60V batteries, it can also step down automatically to a 20V and run four times longer than other batteries. FlexVolt will also work with 20V Max tools and chargers. This backward compatibility means you don’t have to replace your whole workshop.

Upcoming Tools

As with any new accessories, new 60-120V tools are also on the way from DeWalt as well. Here’s a brief list of what’s coming:

  • Brushless 7-1/4″ Circular Saw, DCS575
  • 4-1/2″ – 6″ Grinder, DCG414
  • Reciprocating Saw, DCS388
  • 1/2″ VSR Stud and Joist Drill, DCD460
  • 8-1/4″ Cordless Table Saw, DCS7485

All these tools are impressive in their own right, but the idea of a cordless, brushless table saw is really impressive. Here’s a list of upcoming 120V tools:

  • 12″ Fixed Head Compound Miter Saw, DHS716
  • 12″ Sliding Compound Miter Saw, DHS790

Remember, in order to reach 120V, you would need two FlexVolt batteries to operate the saw. Lower voltage batteries wouldn’t be sufficient.

Conclusion

It’s an exciting time for DeWalt and the tool industry. DeWalt sought to revolutionize the business and they very well may have. Many consumers continue to look for reasons to cut the cord and DeWalt may have just given them another option. FlexVolt is expected to launch in mid-late August.
